Meet Lonnie Washington Sr.

Lonnie Washington grew up on the south side of Bessemer, Alabama. He is a proud product of the Bessemer School System. After graduating from Jess Lanier High School, Lonnie attended Alabama State University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English. He completed his Doctor of Jurisprudence at Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law in 1991 and was admitted to the Alabama Bar in 1992. Attorney Washington worked as Assistant District Attorney for Jefferson County for several years.

In 2001, Lonnie co-founded the law firm Washington, Lloyd & Henderson, PC, and has since concentrated on public interest litigation, mass tort, estate planning, Medicaid estate planning, consumer protection laws, consumer product safety, and home ownership protection law.

Since 2007, Attorney Washington has been honored to serve as Judge Pro-tem in the Birmingham Municipal Courts as well as in the cities of Lipscomb, Midfield, Fairfield and Bessemer.

Since 2010, Attorney Washington has served as General Counsel to the Alabama State Missionary Baptist Convention (ASMBC), which is the state’s largest denomination of African-American Baptists. In this capacity, Attorney Washington travels throughout the State of Alabama and gives free power-point seminars to ASMBC member churches on the following legal issues: non-profit corporate governance, ethics, estate taxation, estate planning of wills, trusts, powers of attorney, living wills and advanced care directives, Medicaid estate planning, consumer protection laws, consumer product safety, and home ownership protection law. Lonnie is affiliated with the Peace Baptist District Association and Jefferson County District Baptist Association.

In 2011, Attorney Washington was awarded the Outstanding Community Service Award by the Metro Birmingham Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Additionally, Attorney Washington was selected to serve as an associate member of the Jefferson County Alabama Personnel Board.

In 2012, Attorney Washington became a network attorney for the Alabama Education Association (AEA), where he represents janitors, cafeteria workers, bus drivers, teachers and other Alabama public school employees during adverse personnel hearings, civil litigation, and criminal proceedings.

In 2013, Attorney Washington was appointed as the Presiding Municipal Judge in Brighton, Alabama and Lipscomb, Alabama.

In 2013, Attorney Washington was selected to serve as a Trustee at the Birmingham Baptist College, which is an affiliate of the Alabama State Missionary Baptist Convention for training African-American ministers.

In 2014, Attorney Lonnie Washington, Sr. was appointed to the Alabama State University Trustee Board by Governor Robert Bentley.

In 2015, Attorney Washington became an Adjunct Professor in the Criminal Justice Department at Miles College, where he teaches Introduction to Courts and Introduction to Corrections. He enjoys mentoring young people and takes very seriously his responsibility in helping to train the next generation of leaders.

Lonnie Washington is the proud father of two sons who attend Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and also works diligently within the Democratic Party. Attorney Washington supports numerous community organizations ranging from Little League Sports to neighborhood associations. Lonnie is a member of the New Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Hueytown where Dr. Charles Winston is the Pastor.
